Asa W. Markel – Senior Associate
email: asamarkel@smbattorneys.com
phone: (602) 230-5401

Asa practices in the firm’s litigation department. He has extensive courtroom experience on the trial and appellate levels, as well as presenting cases to mediators and arbitrators. Asa has taken part in several multi-million dollar lawsuits ranging from premises liability, to class action construction defect, to insurance premium recovery actions. He also maintains a regular presence in the firm’s Flagstaff office, where his Flagstaff caseload includes commercial and real estate disputes and fraudulent conveyance claims. He began his career with the firm as an undergraduate intern with the firm’s transactional department in Flagstaff. Prior to his admission to the Bar, Asa’s other clerkships included a summer with the Civil Division of the Coconino County Attorney’s Office and a summer with a top-ranked criminal defense firm in Glasgow, Scotland.

As well as serving clients in both northern and central Arizona, Asa has represented several foreign clients, including a serving cabinet minister in a foreign government, and conducted out-of-state discovery in several complex lawsuits, as well as provided advice to non-governmental organizations on the interpretation of U.S. human rights treaties. Asa’s scholarly research and publications focus on international law and cross-border legal issues, which have proven useful not only for international clients, but for clients whose cases involve the law of other states and Indian tribes. Asa has experience advising other lawyers in cases involving the enforcement of foreign country judgments in Arizona, parallel proceedings, and the conduct of cross-border discovery. In addition to practicing law, Asa has been a guest lecturer on written advocacy techniques at the Phoenix School of Law, and has lectured on international jurisdiction at the University of Arizona Rogers College of Law.
